Hours
- Agape prides itself in being a family centered service. The family sets the dates and times of arrival and departure according to their need.
- Respite Care hours are available 24 hours a day / 7 days a week at the Agape House, located at 298 Emmental Drive in Berne, Indiana
- Office hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Agape Respite Care is closed for all Major Holidays
Eligibility Criteria
- Any individual birth through adult with an intellectual and / or physical disability or chronic health condition
- Reside within twenty (20) miles of the Agape Respite Care office (In Home Respite)
- Free of communicable diseases
- Free of disruptive behavioral issues that would cause a danger to self or others
- Free of life supporting equipment or skilled nursing care
Scheduling
- Reservations should be made at least one week in advance of the requested stay.
- Recommended weekend reservations should be made 2 -3 weeks in advance if possible
- Reservations may be made up to 6 months in advance for occasions of great importance.
- Reservations are filled on a first come first serve basis, except in the case of an emergency
- Reservations filled according to space available basis
Agape Respite Care is not able to bill private insurance, straight Medicaid or Medicare. We will assist families in applying for subsidy programs to cover the cost of respite care. We have a sliding fee scale according to family size and household income. Agape is committed to serving needs and will not turn someone away because of their financial situation.
Agape Respite Care is certified by the Indiana Family Social Service Administration, Division of Disability and Rehabilitative Service.
Out of Home Respite
The Agape House has a beautiful home-style atmosphere which is equipped with all the features needed for special care. At Agape Respite Care we understand that each person is unique so care is customized to their individual needs and interests.
We are here to assist you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week according to the specific needs of your family’s life. You can count on us whether you desire care for a few hours or for as along as 10 consecutive days.
Children from birth through senior adult are welcomed as guests at the Agape House. Families do not have to transition to a new respite provider as individuals never age out of the program. At Agape Respite Care we accept and appreciate the diversity of the individuals we serve. Some individuals may be limited physically or have communication challenges as a result of cerebral palsy, spina bifida, hydrocephalus, various genetic abnormalities or because of an illness or accident. While their body may not function as usual, intellectually they are smart, with alert, active minds. On the other hand there are individuals who have intellectual challenges and developmental delays, due to Downs Syndrome, brain injury at birth, or other chromosomal abnormalities which result in limitations in functional daily living ranging from mild to profound.
A significant number of our respite guests have challenges due to Autism, Asberger’s Syndrome, Rett Syndrome or Pervasive Developmental Delay not otherwise specified. Our staff is trained in providing personalized care to meet the personal health and safety needs as well as engage them in activities for their personal enjoyment.
At times family caregivers need to be away from their home and need a place for their family member with disabilities to stay in their absence. There are also times when the family caregiver needs to be at home but be relieved of their care responsibilities. Agape Respite Care is here to help.
Length of Respite Stay
- A stay may be from a minimum of two hours to a maximum of ten consecutive days not encompassing more than one weekend.
- Stays must include an approved plan of care and an emergency back-up plan with specific contacts in the absence of the parent or guardian.
