HISTORY OF AGAPE RESPITE CARE, INC.

Respite Care was established under the auspices of the First Mennonite Church, in Berne, Indiana. Roberta (Bertie) Lehman, a member of the congregation brought the need for special care for persons with disabilities to the attention of
the Christian community.
Respite service initially provided care for children
with disabilities during the day and evening at the Agape House at 415 W. Franklin St., Berne, IN. The second year of operation Agape began offering in-home respite and overnight care. Agape Respite Care soon realized that disability occurs also due to accident, Illness, or aging and expanded their services to life span respite serving seniors as well as children.

On Sunday, July 21, 2002, the First Lady of Indiana, Mrs. Judith O’Bannon gave the dedication address at the opening of our new respite home at 298 Emmental Drive, Beme, IN.

Showing God’s love by providing lifespan care for people with disabilities is the focus of Agape’s service. Commitment is also made to Agape to support the family or primary caregiver by offering other support services. Through the demonstration of love and compassion for these needs, we seek to honor God in all services of Agape Respite Care, Inc.

In as much as you have done it for one of the least of these
brothers of mine, you have done it unto me.” Matthew
25:40
